Many newborn babies can become uneasy when in the bath and parents can be worried about losing hold of their baby.
Preparing the bath
You can bath your baby in any room that is safe, warm and clean. Next line the bath with a clean towel, this will make the bath less slipery. Fill the bath with a small amount of water, until you get used to holding your baby.

- Choose a bath time when there will be little or no interruption.
- Before undressing your baby wipe her eyelids (from inner eye to outer eye) with cotton wool dipped in warm water, using a different piece of cotton wool for each eye.
- Undress your baby taking her nappy off last.
- You need only wash your baby’s hair once or twice a week. Gently wash your baby’s genitals and bottom last using water only (although some baby oil in the bath is fine).
- Supporting your baby’s head and neck, lift her out of the bath and place her on her back on a clean soft dry towel.
- If her skin appears dry or she has nappy rash you may want to apply a suitable lotion.
- Empty the bath water and rinse bath ready for its next use.
NEVER leave you baby in the bath unattended. You may wish to talk or sing to your baby while bathing her to help her relax.
